Alex, we've noticed this over at the Googlebar project- we've been preoccupied with lots of other details for the next release lately (see bug 3932 for a very long and meandering discussion), so it's nice to see someone interested in making translations available and actually taking the time to post them while they still work. A new version of the "translation documentation" page is attached to this bug until someone can get it into CVS for me (my home internet access is having problems), and I'd appreciate any feedback you might have. Also, although we've always moved ahead and changed too quickly to handle the translations before, over the past year people have contributed partial translations in french, ukrainian, and chinese (aming others, I think). Would you be interested in these older files as a starting point? I also think we need to start making a log of all the changes to these locale files between updates- how much of this documentation would you be interested in hosting here?

Hi AndyB,

sure it would be good to have some of the (partial) translations, even if they are a little bit
older. I know only German & English, but maybe it helps other people for translating Googlebar.
Also I think it would be good to have (parts of) the "translation documentation" on GooglebarL10N.

Log of changes to the original (english) files are already available through CVS. So if a new
release of googlebar comes out, the translators can do a diff between the language-files of the old
and the new release and then apply the changes onto the localized files. Versioning for the
translated files is IMO useless.

Speaking of the english files ... it would be good if you can deliver the new language files of the
next released version ASAP or maybe even directly upload to GooglebarL10N. Do you and/or any other
developer of Googlebar want CVS access to GooglebarL10N?

Finally a technical question. I've seen that you've done someting with the localization-programming,
so maybe this question is irrelevant: The install-routine of the language packs is now quite more
a hack, because it overwrites the original english files in the en-us-directory. I tried to delete
and re-register the locale to a new directory, but had no success. Would it be possible to link the
used language of googlebar with the "prefered language" which is configurable within Mozilla, so
that e.g. German can be installed under de-at?

GreetingX,
Alex

Odd- my email account won't let me send this to the Yahoo address I got a message from...

Alex, I've rounded up a few of our old translations in a zip file- french, chinese, and ukrainian (the ukrainian one had some problems starting, but I don't think we ever thought much about utf-8 back then; English has 26 letters and no accent marks or umlauts, hurrah!). Since email is not working, I'm not sure how to send this to you, but I would be interested in vastly revising the translation docs (they're much too long-winded for non-native speakers to follow easily), but would like to host them over here to give translators everything they need in one place. Can I get CVS access to the project? Mozdev username is andyb and email address is wpl510 @ myrealbox DOT com.
Now, as for your question- I originally did the translations by simply copying what I saw in the optimoz mouse gestures package, and so my specialized knowledge is rather flimsy. But I have heard about the
translations being linked to the language you use, and managed to find a page of Enigmail instructions that I think will help: http://enigmail.mozdev.org/langpack.html . Note that it mentions switching languages a couple of times, and that the locale registration is handled by changing the install script and the folder name. Hope that helps,
-AndyB

Hi Alex,
If you need some help with the installing, just ring. I had posted a corrected file for your de-AT installer in our bugs at http://mozdev.org/bugs/attachment.cgi?id=1263&action=view
that would mean you'd need to place the 'locale' files in a folder named googlebar/locale/de-AT/googlebar. If you use that directory and the contents.rdf file with your install.js it should work, as long as your googlebar is in the mozilla-bin/chrome/googlebar folder. If you installed googlebar to your user profile for just one user, then the install script may not work.

Well I was delighted to see so many versions already. Great job!

I tried to find a way into the web/cvs here but don't see a link to it. As it was put by one of the other googlebar guys, John, "you've lost the most sleep on install", I would be willing to help out here on that.

I think the best resource I've seen is at mozilla.org, where there were many dead ends when I last tried to see what was needed. This,
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/l10n/mlp_chrome.html page, although it goes a little deeper into the subject than it used to, or needs to for a language pack for a mozilla extension...

Making some web site changes- mainly adding the "mailing list" and "documentation/how-to" links to the top navigation bar, as both have the potential to be valuable resources here once they're put together. Also moving the docs from Googlebar main to the Googlebarl10n site where I think they'll be more directly useful, along with checking in the localization files to CVS as separate files, not just XPI's. These are just ideas to start, so feel free to move back if they don't look right here.

If the install links don't work immediately, don't panic for a few hours- I just changed all the links over to use Mozdev's mirrors, but it may take a few hours before the files are picked up and spread around. Until then, users may experience some error messages when downloading- sorry. It's currently very early morning, July 29th as mozdev counts time.

I'am glad that there is now a google toolbar for Mozilla. But I miss the PageRank feature - do you expect to have a version with this feature soon?

[8] Submitted by: Alex on Thursday July 31st 2003

Keith, GooglebarL10N is for the Localization only. Ask under http://googlebar.mozdev.org/feedback.html

[9] Submitted by: AndyB on Friday August 1st 2003

Keith, as mentioned on the Googlebar FAQ page, we're currently not implementing PageRank because Google (the company) has generally not been friendly to people who have done so in the past, though it is possible.

Alex, it's occurred to me... shouldn't we keep a list of email addresses in "protected" and remove them from the installation page (where spam harvesters can get them)? We could instruct users to contact us as an intermediate if they had problems with the translation.

[10] Submitted by: Alex on Friday August 1st 2003

The E-Mail-Adresses are already in "protected" :-)
I've done this a few days ago.

I've asked every Translator, how they want to be mentioned on the website, so I think they are aware
that Spam may occur, don't you?

The ENGLISH version has SPANISH notes, instructions and comments. Is there a fix for this?

I have finished translating googlebar-0.6.17 into Japanese. I put xpi-packaged file on my server space. See below.

Installing Japanese language package was successful on my machine(MacOSX10.2.6). I started translating googlebar-0.7.06 into Japanese.

Very helpful comments here, thanks for posting this info.

Going in to the project I was a bit hesitant at
first. It seemed to much information to handle right
away. But as I got into it more and more it turns
out it is really possible to contribute something
even as a beginner to on-the-fly programming. I'm looking forward to continuing to learn more and in the soon future start my own project.

Thanks a lot!
